Hi all,

damn, its happened - smooth seas never mailed a skilled sailor etc etc!

Thread was bad on this one anyway, hence my messing around!

whats the possibilities now?

I can't weld a nut onto that, its 1/4" deep
I drill it out and fit a helicoil
Start playing with bolt extractor sets?

can I do all this in situ, its back left so I can remove the heat shield and there is quite a lot of room

Heat it, then shock it with a decent parallel punch to try and break the hold, soak with +gas etc,

I'd then opt for bolt extractor and take your time getting it centre.

Never tried bolt extractors but it's very usual for them to snap off I hear and then you can't drill it out, they are hard and you have to have them spark eroded, might as well scrap head so my 2p worth is DONT risk a stud extractor, drll it out

if the other stud is out use a long bolt as a drill guide, your eye is very accurate, a piece of vac tube around your centre punch is good for getting it dead centre, start with a small drill and work up slowly

remember no more than 25mm deep or your head is scrap

not a head but same principle

As Itchy, I would drill it. Every time I've tried a stud extractor they've broken.

Stud extractors have a reputation to match that of Elite!! Steer clear of both.

The flaw with stud extractor is that they expand the stud and jam it in even harder. The harder you turn the harder they jam :x

Drilled it out now. It’s not the cleanest circular hole anymore.

It’s already larger than a M10, so could target M12 now.

Or would a helicoul be an alternative?

So far so good.

Cut the Thread out and inserted a helicoil for 1 size bigger. Had to make gasket and exhaust holes bigger too.

Seems to tighten up well. Now putting everything back together again and will fire it up again soon.
