Warm Air Pickup on Exhaust, Essential?

Hi,

Has anyone stopped using the warm air pickup on exhaust, ?

On my 1988, 1.9DG, I need to replace the part of the exhaust the warm air pick up, (to the airbox), connects to.

It's a lot cheaper ( and easier) to get a pipe without the connection, so is this part essential?

Thanks for all the replies

No, it doesn't make any noticeable difference in our relatively benign climate.
