My van was overheating and i did not hear the radiator fan comming on which tells me it could be the fan sensor switch.I am having trouble finding one of these although i think i located one on ebay from Latvia..does anyone know of any uk dealers who stock these...van is 1985 1.9D

Thanks...i havent had a chance yet to have a look but from what i have read the sensor is located at the top of the radiator (although the link you posted suggests it at the bottom right) this was a design flaw in VW design of these ..i will know more when i have a look at the radiator over the weekend..thanks for the links

Bottom right - this is the hottest zone on our radiators.

I just got mine delivered from Brickwerks today

Ok i tested the sensor connector and the fan did come on so its the sensor thats faulty.I did notice though that the fan is only comming on at one speed when i jump the connector weather its full speed or half i dont know...any ideas why this might be?.I will check the wiring on Sat when i have more time ,i am thinking if the fans working it should be working on the two speeds..

OK,

When I did this, only had one speed, what i did was remove all the earth crowns from above the glove box, gave them a clean, put them back on and tested again.. worked. Thats what I would do first, then dig deeper if this doesnt work.

Just to to add, if the fan is not noisy and a gentle spin it will be the low speed, if its pretty darn loud then its the high speed one

Earth Crowns?...i assume these will be green wires with connectors

The earth crowns are on the passenger front behind the fuse box, and the left attaching to the bodywork. In the footwell area

Its a a small circle should be 2 of them shaped like crowns. The have variousconnections going to them providing earth to all your electrical conncetions. Should be about 5-6 on each one.

If there is a leak in the windsceen, water runs down and sometimes rusts the connections. Mine were ok once i pulled them out 1 by one and checked them over

Don't assume green is earth, brown is. Also black isn't neutral/return/earth it is usually live/positive on German items.

I just watched a video of a guy who replaced the earth crowns with what he called a bus bar or earth bar

There are two types available 100amp and 150 amp..migh be worth while if the crowns are corroded
