Fitting new speedo cable - 252957803F

All looks fairly straightforward, but hesitating over grommet. New one came with this.

Image

Old cable grommet below fitted onto bulkhead. New grommet is resting on cable at the wheel/steering knuckle end. Yet part of it looks like it should fit on the bulkhead (thin mm groove and large outside diameter). But won't slide up and over an outer protective sleeve. The other end of grommet looks like it could fit steering knuckle. I could cut but seems wrong option.

What am I missing. I know I can buy the knuckle sleeve as a separate part.
Thanks

Had the same query myself when I replaced mine recently, I couldn't see any other way of utilizing the new one without cutting which was what I did in the end as I couldn't be a**ed to think any more and needed to use the van!
I am wondering now if they should have been separated leaving the large end free to move over the sleeving and the narrower piece as you think for the knuckle end.

Almost gave up but managed to work out the puzzle. The grommet is for he bulkhead end. Pulled off grommet, so to speak [WINKING FACE]removed sleeve then slipped grommet up to speedo end and refitted sleeve. Simples. I suspect it is packed that way to stop sleeve being lost. Need to purchase the rubber bit for the knuckle end as a separate part. Feeling pleased with myself I then struggled for 10 minutes trying to thread cable through axle until I realised I was pushing it in the wrong hole!

I couldn't separate the grommet from the sleeve piece on mine at all, I wonder if, with automation, they are moulded as one piece and usually come apart when they are threaded on to the cable and mine was more firmly attached than normal.
