Power cable WAY too thin (and/or earth). Either that or connection is poor and bass is literally rattling it loose. More likely former though.

Could be the thermal protection for the output stages cutting in. Are the speakers the correct impedance? If the impedance is too low, or speakers connected in parallel it can make matters worse.
My stereo at home does this if I have it loud enough to make my ears bleed.

sorry to sound ignorant here but which one is the power cable, i am a complete novice when it comes to electrics? Also are you saying the earth cable could be too small?

Could be either Matt. Power cable usually the red one on back of stereo. Yup, both cables need very good connections for reliability - ie splicing to a thinner cable would be sufficient to produce symptoms you've got. If its all held together with twisted wires and sellotape (not uncommon I have to say) - you need to get in there and do them properly.
