Temperature Gauge

Just got back from a journey where my temp gauge failed to get up to normal running temperature. It moved about 1/4 of the way rather than the normal 1/2 way mark.
Anybody had this happen or have any explanations? The van seems to be running just fine.

Cheers,

Paul.

I've spoken to Bears here in Birmingham who have done good work and given good advice in the past. I'm told that removing the thermostat housing on early watercooled engines is difficult without breakage and that the housing is very difficult to find.

Before I investigate this potentially expensive possibility does anyone know if the sensor could be faulty - or would that just work or fail?

Thanks for any advice,

Paul.

Has this problem just occured or have you not long had the van and just noticed it?
There are a number of differant sensor types. sometimes garages get mixed up or cant be bothered and fit the wrong one.
there are two sensors in the thermostat housing, one for engine management and one for temp guage.
My new bus 2.1 dj seems to run Ok but the guage only gets to 1/4.
My old bus 2.1 dj had the sensors for the engine management and temp guage swapped. I swapped them back and the bus ran better and the guage registered 1/2

I'll see if I can find the spec for the senders tomorrow.

Thanks Tony

No this is definitely a new thing. I've had the van for 3 years and this is the first time it has happened. It's a DG but I had a Laurie Pettit 2.1 short engine with a Weber carb installed about 2000 miles ago - everything else is as it was. It has behaved the same before and after until this weekend.

Does my engine just have the one sensor?

Oddly odd :? The gauge registered normally again for two or three days and has now gone back to a quarter at running temp. The heater is working fine in normal time and the fan kicks in ok.
