temp gauge woes again

Hello T25 Techs
I have trawled the forum for answers but not exactly what Im looking for. My problem is a 1986 DG 1.9 Watercooled van - the temp gauge has stopped working, also the red led does not light up. In fact the gauge sits hard left and doers not move at all. I have plenty of coolant and confident the engine is running as it should be. But I want this gauge working asap. Now what should I be checking? Where is the temp sender exactly for example? I hope one of you guys can help me? Cheers

the temp sender is on the thermostat housing, which is where the gauge gets its signal, the light however, get its signal both from the sender for the guage AND from the water level sensor in the top of the expansion tank.

you need to "short" the two wires for the temp sender together ( i'm assuming you are a later water system here) to get the gauge to move, to determine if the problem is the wires, or the sender, or indeed the guage its self.( i doubt it on the later)

If the gauge stays still after you have bypassed the sender, look vary carefully at the multiplug at the dash pod, they are known to give greif.

temp sender is £4.50 from GSF with club discount, ask for a new O seal at the same time, thats presuming it's same as a 2.1. My brother just put mine in for me, the seal had perished and a very small leak had fubard the electrics

Thanks guys. Shorted the 2 wire together and gauge full scale. I removed sender and got wet. Doh! I will wait tilltomorrow to put in new sender as o ring perished. The new sender I have is different. Its all in 1 unit. The original is is in 2 parts, inner & outer. Does this sound familiar. The new one can be tightened with a spanner and has brown endpiece. Am I making sense people?
