2.3i engines

has anyone heard of this? they take out a 2.1 and replace it with a new tampered with 2.1 thats become a 2.3 just i was talking to the bloke at the vw garage and he was telling about them. my jackets being replaced and im just interested incase a new engine is on the cards.
