Squeaks!

Evening

VW T25 2.0 Aircooled 1981....

Recently developed a squeak from the engine bay. I've had the alternator refurbed by a mobile auto electrician and all was well for a couple of hundred miles. Now it sounds like I've a budgie trapped under the lid.

I thought it would just be a loose belt but having applied some WD40 carefully on the belt the sound didn't go away. The belt looks in good order with no glazing etc. On turning the key the engine the battery light doesn't go out till I apply some revs and the oil light flickers for a few seconds...

Am I right in thinking this is just a (very) loose or shagged belt?

Suggestions appreciated....

Battery light operation is normal.
With the engine off can you turn the alternator pulley by hand = belt slipping?

Funnily enough I didn't try that. The deflection seems good and from all I've read it seems a chirping is caused by alignment rather than slipping. The edge of the belt seems quite shiny but I expect that's normal?

When the engine is running the belt seems to go great guns :D

I've ordered a new belt and I'm going to replace whats on. I'm not sure of the age, history of the existing belt.
