So this morning we went out to the van to start doing some work. I was going to change the oil filter and oil so I started the van it's a 1.9 watercooled dg engine carb petrol She started fine first go but then after a Minuit just stopped suddenly I turned the key and she turned over but did not start I tried again am doing the same again. First thought was fuel so we filled her up a little she did it again turned over but no start just kept turning even when I put the foot peddle down just kept turning. I changed the spark plugs to new ones the old ones looked good a slight tan colour. I changed the air filter aswell. And the same again she just won't start it can't be the starter motor as she turns over I have run out of ideas I'm going to have a look on the wiki but any ideas would be grand thanks guys

Back to basics!
Check spark at plugs
If yes , check fuel at carb
If yes check ignition timing
Now from your description I would say either no sparks because a ignition component has failed, or no fuel , BUT not timing at fault

Yeah we tested the spark we had a good spark we were thinking fuel to carb she has sat for a week so that has not done her any good we will have a look again tomorrow

Yeah no fuel filter in the engine bay it's under the van near the fuel tank but we do however think it's the carb if I remember rightly the original owner posted on here a long time ago with the same problem and I think someone was saying to put fule in the carb and it worked so I'll read up on that we have the Haynes manual and the wiki along with you guys we feel nothing is unfixable and this is just the start of our adventures

Take the carb apart and blow the jets through

Check the fuel pump and rod. Sounds like fuel starvation, also check that there is a non return valve and that it is working.

It's a new fuel pump the original owner just got it done we are going to try the old egg cup trick pouring fule into the carb but we're a little unsure of where to pour it I took the pancake part of the carb held on with three screws there is one hole to the front with a flap and one at the back we're assuming it's into the front one with the flap ps sorry for my very basic explanation I am learning but still need time so calling it a flap for now is my way haha

Try a little more to see if it eventually draws the fuel back up from the tank. If this works then you need to work out what is causing the drain down. As i previously mentioned check that there is a non return valve situated close to the tank. Did you check to see if there was any fuel in the filter?

Yeah fule in the filter it has been sat for about a week so maybe that has something to do with it

In hot weather it can evaporate from carb and its a long way to draw fuel if line is empty, plus engine needs to be running for pump to work at maximum efficiency. If you repeat exercise, pump should eventually keep up on its own. This is actually why I switched to an electric pump.

Thanks guys all worked did the old egg cup of fuel into the carb and after a few goes she started needed some extra exloration but she ran it took a while for her to idle properly sometime spluttering but she ran smooth after that we also noticed the alternater belt was very loose so we tightens her up and she ran smooth just going to start her up everyday and do an oil change soon then getting the fuel tank replaced at vauxlaust in kenilworth and insured taxed and then were hitting the road

I'd go down the electric pump route, its relatively cheap. Asked a garage to fit one when I broke down but annoyingly they fitted another mechanical pump. OOI where should the non return valve be fitted ideally? Had this problem a lot this year but by the looks of it I was a bit heavy handed on how much petrol to put down the carb
