When I replaced my gearbox I took the starter motor off.
While it was off I cleaned up all the terminals and earth points, including the box to chassis strap.
I had to cut back the thin starter wire to find good clean copper and replaced the spade connector.
The motor used to fail to catch once in a blue moon but now it fails more often than not, the solenoid is clicking but the motor aint turning.
If I keep trying it catches after a three or four tries.
I've had it off again intending to strip the solenoid and clean it's contacts but it's a sealed unit.
The old hit it with a hammer trick doesnt help.
Stcking a screwdriver accross the solenoid terminals spins the motor nicely every time so the motor seems to be ok and that proves the earth too.

1- do the problems never end?
2- anything you can suggest that I've missed?
3- has anyone got a spare solenoid they'd swap for a handfull of sheckles? (or shackles )
Shipping a complete motor up here would be pretty expensive but a solenoid shouldn't break my bank.

I've got some 3/4" tested shackles but no spare solenoid.

Cheers Guys, I'll follow up on both.
I've got some relays lying around so can easily wire one in.
If that doesn't solve it I'll replace the solenoid.

Well I fitted the hot start relay tonight and she's still reluctant.
It's never the easy repair is it.
So I pulled the motor again and tried to get the solenoid off but one screw was corroded in and had to be drilled.
Looking at the braided cable going into the motor I think I should replace the whole thing for piece of mind.

Over the years I have picked up spares of almost everything as they come up and before I need them, usually pick up cheap, if you had one easy swap to fault find.

I have to say lots of bits for sale on facebook now ebay is such a rip off for sellers.

You need a new starter solenoid. Your description verifies this. When you bridge the two nuts, you're bypassing it. Starter easy enough to get off at least.

You can see that over the years water ingress has oxidised the terminal and isolating the circuit, leaving sporadic making
Bosch starters are readily repaired
My local shop did it for £25

it has a screw terminal instead of the spade which looks like an improvement too.

same symptoms as mine so I replaced the brass bush in gearbox and bought a new starter still have same problem .When I turn key its clicks then after 3-4 turns it starts,im learning to live with it as cant sort it.

I've got a refurbished motor coming from wagonbuild and have already done the bush so fingers crossed it'll be the motor.

New motor arrived and fitted.
All is now good. must have been the solenoid.
