Hi,
Very shortly will be fitting replacement panels to my van, front wheel arch, b post, outer sill, rear wheel arch etc.. yes, I know loads...
Question is in the past I have always slid the top edge of the new panel under the existing panel and welded through the existing panel to the new.
This will leave an overlap, which am not happy with as we all know what happens after a while..!!
I can't seem to find any photos online, to show the easiest / correct method..?
Anyone help?

I use a joggling tool that way you still overlap it but it sits flush.

Depends on which panel you're doing to be honest. Some are best butt welded, some are ok with an overlap. Have a look at my resto thread in the signature below... Lots of photos in there...no matter what you do you need to get rid of all rust and get it all protected from air and moisture from both sides with seam sealer and decent paint.

Basically the entire bottom up to the first body line, so each panel looks like it could either slide under the upper panel or could actually be the line in the bodywork, if that makes sense..

Got to reconstruct the c pillar as it was shot, then pretty much do the same repair to the rear of the trailing arm mount as you did before adding rear panels..
Primer or red oxide, then seam sealant, brushed, then Stone chip..

If the inner c post is really bad then buying new ones and cutting them down might save you a lot of time. They are about £30 each.

Hi, did look for something pre made, but couldn't find on the usual sites.. could you remember where you saw them??

Do yourself a favour and ditch the red oxide and get yourself some epoxy primer.

Used por15 on my beetle resto a few years ago...

Lechler 29107 for panels that will be seen because it sands better. I used jotamastic 87 for underbody stuff that won't be seen... it's cheaper and even tougher than the lechler.
Por15 can be tricky to put on right and to overpaint

So, picture of the bodyline that my new panel will fit up to.. do I slide the new panel under the old, plug weld through, fill etc.., or do I butt weld the old to the new, presumably inside the bodyline to hide the join..?

I butt welded mine, just go slow and keep it cool with an airgun... then grind the welds flat, epoxy primer and a skim of filler. You can paint the rear of the repair through the oblong shaped hole in the b post with a cut-down paintbrush on a bit of wire like a coathanger or something.

I've looked at Brickweks, heritage and schofield and none seem to stick those parts. Seem to be well over £100 each from overseas suppliers. Surely not £30 at a vw dealer?!? I could do with one myself!
