Make your own Doka rear canopy

I thought this might be worth sharing if anyone was thinking of making a rear cover for their Doka/pickup...

I decided to build a rear cover for my Doka, since the genuine canopies were not only expensive, but are also a little ugly and a tad too utilitarian.

After many design revisions, I concluded on this simple tubular / wooden design.

I've opted for ¾" tubing which matches the bull bar and got couple of hoops bent to a template. The bottom of the legs slot onto a short section of pipe welded to a plate, secured with a quick release pin. This will make it easy to remove the whole canopy if required.

I prepared the metalwork and had the sections welded at a local fabricator on this fixed jig. Managed to get an nice finish by using a roller to apply a primer of galvafroid, followed by a couple of coats of matt black spray paint.

I wanted the canvas to follow the curve of the roof, so but adjusting the depths of the timber battens I was able to accurately create an effective curve.

I'll be having a canvas fitted, which should be nice an tight, so watch this space for updates in the coming weeks...

Looks nice! I'd like an aluminium NATO style, but wow they're expensive! :ok

That looks fantastic! Will fit fit snugly over the canopy rail on the back of the Cab?

I'm in need of some help, can anybody either send me or post on here how the canopy is held into the rail???

Looks like the OEM one has some sort of metalwork? https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de ... mizug.html

Need to know ASAP, please help! Thanks, Gary.

I don't have mine anymore, but it had a metal stiffener stitched I nside the front edge, the same shape as the rail top and sides. At the ends it came out of the canvas and was held down onto the body work by two bolts behind the cab - near the top of the drop sides, there's threaded holes there.
