Hi
1982 1.6CS - I need to replace the heater control valve and cable ... I have the new control valve and cable is on order from Brickwerks..
Where is it ? and what do I need to dismantle to get to it please ? I can't find it for looking
The cable disappears behind that big shroud in front of gearstick do I need to remove the whole dash or is there another way
Thanks for any replies
Matt - brighton

If it's for the heater fan it's a dash off job. Good luck mine has gone but I don't want the headache. Let us know how easy/hard it is

To find the heater control valve, remove the spare wheel, replace it with your head and look straight up behind the radiator.
Good oportunity to flush out the heater matrix with a hose pipe while you're at it.

Thanks Nick and Colin for the replies,
Hows your AEF going Colin ? mines still running sweetly - best thing I ever did to my camper.
Nick - the new control valve is £8 from VW Heritage but same one (meyle) only £4 from Euro Car Parts on e bay. The cable on mine was buggered too so replacement from Brickwerks is in the post (£15 delivered). Previous owner just plumbed in a tap to the exposed heater hose in the cab for temperature control

. but it has worked .
I will take spare off later today and fingers crossed that its Colins answer trather than the dash out job.
All the best
Matt

Matt.
Glad your conversion has been OK.
Yes the AEF is brilliant. 25k miles without a hitch, except for a slight oil leak from the crank seal behind the flywheel which I changed a couple of weeks ago. I hope it's OK because we're off round the Baltic to Nordcap sometime this year. I put a longer 4th gear in the gearbox to reduce cruising RPM a bit too.

Nice one !
When its time for my box to be rebuilt I will ask you more about that.
In meantime I have upped the gearing by fitting the biggest tyres possible and it has worked a treat
Best

On the very early diesels (some of the ones with the very early rad), the heater valve isn't underneath, but by your left shin, below the cold start cable pull.

Thanks - thats where it was... I traced the old cable to that point ... I couldn't find the valve because the previous owner replaced it with a household plumbing valve.
Thanks
