Drive Shaft Knocking...I think.

Hi,

Yesterday a knocking noise developed when driving our van. When the clutch is depressed it stops and is worse under load. We've experienced this before but not for a couple of years. I've read various threads and it seems to be the drive shaft. So, I have a question:

When I move the nearside driveshaft from side to side, all seems well, a nice spongy feel and no unexpected noises. Nicely cushioned if you will. Now, when I do the same to the other one, there's a knocking sound at the wheel end, as though the drive shaft is striking against something. Can I presume that they should both be like the nearside one and that something is amiss on t'other?

Any advice or confirmation would be gratefully received.

Thanks,
Haydn

Undo the boots at the thin end and pump some new grease in, they may well be good for another several thousand miles , BUT get the nessasary spares in to do THE job in the mean time

As Mocki says. One of mine was knocking, I just squeezed the boot to move the grease around and got a spare cv joint just in case. Handy when a completely different CV joint failed.

They appeared to be but I'd need to jack the van up to double-check :ok
