Noisy speedo.

Had a tiny bit of noise from speedo at low speed for a while, last week above about 40 it suddenly started making a loud noise,( like a bearing gone or something thats spinning resonating but pitch pretty consistant) this continued as I drove up the motorway for 30 mins then suddenly stopped again not to he heard for the rest of the day ( over an hour on motorway)
Today same happened, stopped after half hour but started again 5 mins later, slowed at a junction it stopped not to return when I sped up.
Had the speedo out last night and spun up with batt drill and could not hear it. oiled speedo cable a bit.
Speedo cable has broken plastic shroud so I'm going to swap it but if its speedo then it's got to be the gearbox I'd say. Odometer turns too slowly to make this noise.
Can these be serviced or is it a second hand replacement?
thanks

Think I remember ghost123 having some good pictures of the inner workings?
Might be worth lubing the little cogs and worm gear and trying again though..?

speedo cogs? ......obviously the van gearbox has nothing to do with a 2wd speedo as its driven from the front wheel.....

Sorry I mean gearbox within the speedo, the silver thing at the back of the unit where the cable enters.

If the cable has a broken plastic shroud, the cable end will not sit tightly and you will get noise from it. Replacement of the cable should hopefully fix the problem.
