MOT coming up and the small hole in the silencer that escaped sanctions in last years MOT, is now joined by other pin pricks. If I slap some gun gum or equivalent over the holes, will it get through the MOT? I am going to fit stainless at some point but feel there is still a bit of life left in current system which I think is about 3 years old. Little bit of blackening noticeable at flange which might need resealing.

I have had a car pass with a sheet of thin steel slathered in gun-gum wrapped around the exhaust can and secured with band-it straps.
Gun-gum on it's own tends to fall out, the sheet steel held it in.
These days I'd be welding a patch over it but I appreciate you may not be able to do that.
Anything that is secure and stops the leak is acceptable.
What counts as secure is up to the tester's discretion.

Before i changed my exhaust i covered a small hole with some of that self adhesive aluminium exhaust tape, lasted a good 6-8 months before i removed it and applied a bit more. Cheap and plenty on a small roll. Just make sure you give the area a bit of a scrub with some sandpaper before applying it.

Put some Holts gum gum in there as you said.
I did mine last week for MOT, which was worse than that and mine passed without an advisory!
Not sure if you have used it before? It really is good stuff, just read the instructions for the best results, as it does make a difference to how it seals!

I am in a similar position re my exhaust. Just want to get 1 more year from it then can put my savings plan into effect for S/S Exhaust.

The VW Speedshop one looks good, but it's trying to find someone locally trustworthy enough to fit it!
I have spoken to these guys in Suffolk for a fabricated entire system & they done VW T25 before, come highly recomended by all accounts!

Before I got around to fitting my stainless system my exhaust was previously made entirely from the aluminium repair panels and gum It passed the MOT juwst fine

Mine has got through two mots with gum gum, but I do intend to replace it...

Thanks for all the advice. Filled holes with gun gum. Covered with thin metal tape and then wound some exhaust repair tape around it. Tape was a bit short!

Found larger hole just inside end seam which I also filled and just allowed to harden.



Apparently the key criteria is that it's not blowing at any point.

Well the good news is that it passed its MOT this morning [THUMBS UP SIGN]. Am going to order a Stainless one and decide whether to have a go at the nuts myself or seek professional help.

Now on with a very long list of jobs still to do.

Likewise myself. Big craters in exhaust. 2018 S/S for sure for me. Fit once & forget!

Exhaust Part 2
Well I watched my patch slowly disintegrate and holes getting bigger but balked at a full stainless so went for a new back box only. I was also unwilling to tackle manifold nuts in case I hit issues. The old one was fitted with a gasket at both ends. I'm tempted to fit an olive at the engine side of the box. What are advantages of olive over gasket. Is it wort the hassle of trying to fit the olive?
