hi
yesterday the missus took the van to work , she doesnt usually drive the van but she needed it . however last night she phoned me when she had left work to tell me the van was playing up, she drove it about 8 miles with it playing up.
when i asked what she meant she said when driving along the road if she put the foot down to go faster the van pretty much wouldnt speed up , but it was ok about ten to twenty miles per hour ,
when i got to look at it last night we are pretty sure the clutch has gone the smell alone and the fact i think it must have been on its way out. my mechanic had a quick look and he thought the same too. however now it wont start at all, i can hear a click at the ignition barrel and i can hear a click right at the starter motor
but nothing after that . any ideas as why this would have happened and what the problem would be .
its a 1985 1.9 petrol
cheers dave

if its in gear and depressing the clutch is having no effect then the starter wont turn..... however this isnt consistant with your description and the smell, which gave the impression the clutch was slipping rather than not disengaging ??
all will be reveiled when the box is out to inspect the clutch tho

The heat generated from the slipping clutch may have knackered your starter.

yeah it was starting totally fine yesterday morning.i put a new starter in the van about 5 months ago.
its a pity it happened when the missus was driving it as i would have left it where it was and i would have known exactly what to describe
