I initially had a decent radio but it didn't fit properly so I swapped it for a cheapo Maxtek deckless which constantly loses reception. Can any one recommend something half decent that fits?

I fitted the one out of the Subaru engine donor car, they are made by phillips, it's too long even with the rubber stop removed the screw hits the heater, so we just fitted the metal fitting cage with 1cm proud and put black foam single sided closure tape over the exposed cage you wouldn't notice it protrudes without looking closely and it doesn't interfere with the gearshift and doesn't flob about

The heater box is thermoplastic.

IME a modest interference betwixt radio and heater can successfully be removed, with suitable heat source & a lump of wood.

I fitted a sony DAB radio with the provided cage, fitted no problem & works a treat.even has a usb slot so can play all my tunes from a dongle.

Likewise with the Sony. Plenty of bells and whistles for 130 quid.

I've got a mechless Pioneer unit and been really happy with it, got it from here (Cheapest Pioneer is currently £46, but expect to pay a little more if you want bluetooth etc).

I can recomend the Phillips CE138 (non bluetooth) or CE152 (Bluetooth)
I have the CE152 in mine.
I went for the Phillips as it's really narrow depth & the controls really easy.
No CD player, so the unit can fit flush with the dash. Looks far tider, then my previous one of half hanging out of the dashboard!

Another DAB user here, no CD so chassis is 2/3 the length of usual type, fits really easy and flush without crushed up wires behind.
SD card and USB ports savee need for carrying CD, downside is im not entirely sold on the reliability of Dab signal and my FM has a mind of its own,

Got a mechless sony in mine, it's shallow so doesn't foul at the back. fits well.
Also has usb that recognises both iphone and sony mp3 player and charges them while using them too.
Remote control so you can control it while in bed, including scrolling through albums/tracks on the usb device.

If you share my regard for things made in the 1990's, in Europe, I can recommend the Blaupunkt RD148. TBH I only really use it to listen to the radio, and the FM RDS tuner seems to be a good one:
