Replacing oil pump

Hi, we got a 1.9dg petrol (1989), that we have the engine out of and have taken the old pump out with the puller tool, but when putting the new pump back in it slides in easily, seems smaller than the old pump we taken out, is that normal or should it be a snug fit?
Thanks

yep should be a snug fit or you get air drawn in and loss of pressure on the output, it's common of them to be slightly smaller but it's not good.
Where did you buy the pump?
Perhaps it's not a good quality one?
You can o ring the pump to solve the problem but it's not a job you can do without access to a lathe

Thanks Itchyfeet, it just pulls out easily by hand, whereas the old one we had to use puller to get it out? It was from Brickwerks.

Well BW usually sell good quality, seems many are like it, have you measured up diameter?
Why are you changing the pump?
General feeling is don't put it back with the cover gasket, use Curil t to seal it, cover gaskets are often more than the endfloat allowance

we have the engine out and thought it would be wise to change pump, we saw the cover plate was scored when we took it out. Could we change the old cogs for the ones in the new pump and put the old case back in, as we are thinking whatever pump we get will be the same?, thanks

I don't know what cover plates you have on your engines but when we have scored plates on raw water pumps on boat engines we turn the plate over to get a new surface - it may or may not be possible on yours.
I'll leave the pump size to others who have been there on those engines.

Thanks Oldie, we're not to worried about the plate, as we bought another one, just seems strange theat the older pump fits better than the new one. Thanks

old one will have been stuck in with oil oil and possibly sealant.
measure diameter of new and old with vernier caliper, you can get one for a fiver or less on ebay.
