Hi all,
I have a tin top Carravelle '84 petrol (new engine 1.9 DG that those at the VW engine company fitted for me )
now my question:
the rear wiper works - hooray!, but it doesn't always stop in the 'home' position. Indeed, it could stop at any point in it's travel. It's OK(ish) as after continually hitting the wiper stalk in the cab I can eventually get it to cycle and stop in the horizontal 'home' position. I'm taking a guess here, but I don't think VW made it this way? do any of you guru's out there have any idea where I can start to look to get it to always stop in the 'home' position?

I don't know about our rear wipers as mine has never gone wrong! Yet. But a Volvo estate that I had had this problem and there was a diode inside the motor that I replaced and then normal service was resumed. May be a red herring and ours operate completely differently.

Maybe the threads are worn on the threaded screw or in the wiper arm hole and the arm is spinning? Undo the 13mm nut on the arm and check?


Top-Tip: Change the relay out and you can have intermittent rear wiper too.

In fact, it might be the relay that's at fault come to think of it!

There are two 12v feeds to the motor, one via the stalk switch and one which goes to a switch on the motor which is closed except when the wiper is in the park position, so when the wiper is turned off at the stalk the motor runs until the switch on the motor opens at the park position. I would be checking that circuit. If the wiper moves but stays within the normal movement arc across the window then it's not a case of the arm being loose on the spindle.
