Oh dear, not having much luck lately.

Driving to work this morning, stuck in traffic, the coolant light started flashing. It was about three quarters of the way up.

Wasnt going anywhere fast, and I kept switching engine off and on. Fan didnt kick in at all.

Started seeing steam from the back and I pulled over on a grassy verge.

Waited half hour (late for my classes now) and once traffic had cleared went on my way. No red flashing and got to work.

Did the fan test, paperclip on middle spade and either one of the other terminals... nothing, did it with ignition on... nothing nada. Tried with a multimeter, no joy.

Came home tonight, temp needle stayed just below half, straight run home and it was cool.

Do I need a new fan or is there another test to do??

Check your no1 fuse.Assuming you have a late fuse box.

Checked and replaced just in case

Try the relay above fuses and earths. They get fussy. Try and clean. Worked for me

Just an update.

Checked feed with meter 12.99.

Does that mean I need a new fan??

Either fan or rad fan switch.

SORTRED, wooohooo.

Pulled all earth points off the crown, gave them a clean, did the paperclip test, worked!!

Bought a new rad sensor off brickwerks also. Oh well, good to have a spare.

Balls and more balls.

Fan works well with paperclip, changed sensor, took it out for a spin, got it up to temp. Sat in it while it got hotter.

Light came on, no fan... Bloody hell. Thought I had done it.

Any suggestions?? Worth fitting a chicken switch? If so how and what do I need to do this??

Is the sensor linked to the dash in any way??

Have a nose above the earth crowns. You should see a relay up there sitting on a bracket? Thats the fan relay. Try removing it and reseating it. Sometimes the tabs fur up and it fails to make contact. Worth a try.

Ok thanks, will have a look tomorrow when doing the rear shocks.

Other than that new relay??

Is there a way to test before it before I start overheating??

Quite tricky without rolling up my sleeves and checking the circuit for you. Double check fuses too. If fan starts with paperclip its obviously fine and no reason to think new sensor faulty but a multimeter might help.

Fan is going with paperclip test

Is there air in the cooling system , if so there may not be enough coolant flowing past the sender to turn the fan on. Is the red light flashing or steady. Steady red light is high temp , flashing is low coolant level. Loads of info on Wiki on bleeding the system.

Oooo interesing.

I am getting the flashing light on when it reaches halfway... thought this was due to problems with the dash.

Will investigate. Radiator is hot (and slight leak) so draining and new radiator might be the way to go

If rad is leaking then definitely renew it. Over the years they sludge up and loose efficiency, if you don't know it's history it could be over 30 years old with mixtures of God knows what having flowed through it . Brickwerks do them for about £ 160 but they can be found a bit cheaper if you shop around.
