Billowing smoke

Hello I was wondering what possible causes there may be for my diesel 1.6 producing quite a lot of smoke and a sweet oily diesel smell that fairground generators used to make?

Sorry about the vaugeness but any good for thought would me gladly appreciated.

The colour of the smoke? As far as I know it's helpful to aid the diagnosis. Good luck

And is it just when starting, or do you lay down a constant smokescreen?

Hi RogerT it's like a white almost blue smoke and it's really bad when I start and then when I put my foot down.

If you are having no issues with the cooling system then white smoke will either be timing or injector related.
Whip the upper timing belt cover off and have a look at the pulleys, if there are paint marks on them then it's a fairly safe bet the pump timing is out.

Took it into the mechanics.
All fine thankfully.
Apparently it is normal for diesels to produce a bit of smoke when you start them and its cold.
All good.
:ok

If it's only when you're starting, is your cold start handle working ok? If you're not familiar then this is the pull handle at the lower edge of the dash to the left of the driver (rhd). Pull that out when starting. If you can, mine won't, so I've fixed mine so the the lever at the engine end is always pulled. What this lever does is advance the pump timing below I think 2000rpm, and helps to reduce smoke on starting, and make starting easier. New cables available on BW, for lhd only I think :(

Here is a video of my 1.6TD smoking on startup - well it smokes whenever you press the gas pedal.

Any ideas of what this can be?
Do I need a new engine or perhaps something obvious that could be fixed?

Any ideas would be awesome.

Hi I have added another post of my van billowing smoke.
Seems to have gotten worse.
Perhaps the posts need to be combined.
Thanks
Timmo

Why didn't you just combine them in the first place?

Looks the same as mine really, don't most of the diesels do this?

You need to do a timing check; cam and injector pump!
The pump timing looks like it's retarded!
Where was the microphone when you did the recording?
