CU engine - heat exchanger support brackets

I have had my van for nine years now, but it wasn't until I saw sarran1955's thread (titled Ooops...) that I realised it was missing two brackets that support the tail end of the heat exchangers near where they connect to the silencer.

The brackets are visible in the 2nd and 3rd pics here

http://archive.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic ... &start=105

They are not mentioned in Haynes or Bentley, and I have not seen them in a vagcat parts diagram.

Without them the entire weight of the heat exchangers and silencer is borne by the cyclinder head studs - not an ideal state of affairs!

So.... does anyone know the part numbers? Even then, I'm guessing they're no longer available. So, is anyone who has these brackets able to provide a pattern for fabricating them from scratch? They're just folded sheet metal, so should be easy to make.

Thanks in advance!

Brilliant! Many thanks bigherb.

Part 11 costs €57.50(!!!!) incl delivery from VW Classic, got it for €41 via online-teile.com

Part 19 is NLA, but found it for a mere £14.45 incl delivery on allcarpartsfast.co.uk

Orders completed, just waiting for the email to say they can't find the part!

And the first email arrives, from allcarpartsfast.co.uk -

"I'm very sorry but due to a mistake in the manufacturer system that populates our site, we have listed the part you have purchased as available but it is currently out of stock. I'm not able to source it from any of our alternative sources."

This is the right-side bracket, part 19 in the diagram. So, has anyone fabricated this part? Anyone got any photos Of this part? Might just have to get some bits of cardboard and start working out a shape that fits...

Hello,

Nice to see Oops! being of use.. :)

I've had a look in my CU crate.. sorry no bracket.. :(

However, I've come across these missing and broken in the past..

Part 19 does not have to be that complicated, it is so to fit into the tinware, and can be a plate with 2 holes.

Same for the other side, I've used Frod alternator bracket before..

A little bit of thought.. eg welding a short 8 mm bolt onto the new bracket will make bolting to the heat exchanger that much easier..

Aircooled bliss.. 8)

Cordialement,

:ok

Here's the bracket before I fabricated and welded on a new end.

Thanks guys, all useful stuff. Looks like the left-hand bracket is on its way, so will let you know how I get on fabricating the right-hand one.

They have automatic and manual gearboxes for sale - I thought that they didn't exist new any more.

Got all excited there for a moment - unfortunately they don't appear to have the righthand side bracket (pn 071256304B), only the two lefthand ones (one for CV engines, the other for CU). If I've got this wrong, let me know!

Still haven't got round to fabricating it...

Both mine had been cut through with a oxy torch when a previous owner had replaced the exhaust and the studs had rusted solid. I improvised with some hacked around angle iron... still holding....
