The vw instruction manual says s up to 1.5 l per 1000 km is normal. Mine doesn't use much at all if I keep my speed down (max 3000rpm - that's 55-60 mph tops), but that think it uses more if I drive faster. Hard to tell as mines not driving anywhere at present....

I don't have a tacho but calculated ( from various bits of info ) that on my 5sp, 3000 is 60 in 5th. 44ish in 4th, 30 ish in 3rd, 20 in 2nd and 10 in 1st, so that's as high as I go now in the gears. Mine pulls well from 2000 which corresponds to 40, 30, 20 in 5th, 4th, 3rd, so I make reasonable progress. No real need to go faster, no one will expect a 29yr old van to burn it up from the lights!

My Jx uses oil too. Nothing to worry about. They are old diesel engines. Mine has 350,000Km on the clock
