Hello again...

I had starting problems, resolved https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 6&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; With a £20 solenoid. Then a week ago it stopped starting again. Took the solenoid off, and with jump leads connected to the collar of the body around be the plunger, and the spade connector, it doesn't do anything! Got another one, a Bosch for £35, but that doesn't do anything when connected to the battery either.

Am I being exceptionally stupid, or am I just really unlucky? Is that the best way to check the solenoid?

I won't like that, the pull in solenoid earths via the motor brushes.

So take the motor off and fit the solenoid to it, then test?

If you use the positive connection that goes to the starter as an earth the pull in coil should actuate the plunger ( there are 2 coils in the solenoid, a pull in one and a holding one) Of course don't test it like this whilst connected to the starter and battery at the non-trigger terminals. Only the holding coil is earthed to the solenoid body, the pull in one is as big'erb says.

You could but it won't tell you much as it should be connected in series with the motor. If you need to check the solenoid windings just use an ohm meter across the trigger terminal and output terminal it should be around 0.5 ohms.

OBG and bigH, I had no idea it was so complicated! Thanks for posting that info, more knowledge stored away.

Covkid, I'd seen the video previously, so first time I had probs I checked that braid, all ok! Cleaned up the ring too. I did, however, watch a brush spring ping across to a cluttered area of the garage (who am I kidding? The whole garage is cluttered!) so had to get a replacement. Very pleased with my trick for getting the thing back together tho, first with the brushes on the bench, place a large socket in the middle, then just slide them over the socket onto the commutator ring.

I've fixed at least three starters with this prob and another where braid was only hanging by a thread. Mind you, you need a whopping soldering tool

Socket trick a good un. The brushes are little $*%£!

Are your main cables in good order?

The problem was that he couldn't get the new solenoids to actuate whilst testing them off the starter. Fully awake

Yes it has because it is it's earth path.
