As an emergency measure to stop the fumes, you can disconnect the flexihoses from the heat exchangers. It might only be one heat exchanger that needs the pipe disconnecting from it, so the heat will go down but the fumes will stop.

Is it really serious enough to swap heat exchangers? Pricey and tricky.
I have the same thing but with the window cracked it hasn't killed me yet. Also when your on the motorway its luke warm air coming through anyway ie. fresh air mixed with warm air.
I have a plastic pipe right at the back (or the front if you are looking from the tailgate) that doesn't seem to be connected properly and won't budge without dismantleing the whole arrangement. I thought it could be that.

I replaced my heat exchangers with second hand ones two weeks ago but I am still getting a horrible smell from the heater. The smell is now not of exhaust gas or oil burning anymore but its still not good.I was wondering if it is worth changing the long hot air pipe that carries the hot air to the front. I am thinking it may be contaminated after all these years. any views on what to use???
I paid £100.00 for my s/h heat exchangers but I think long term I would have been better off paying the £250.00 from JK for new ones.

Yes it goes between the chassis and the petrol tank and if anyone knows where I can get a cheap relacement/substitute please let me know.

aircoolers. why ? buy a watercooled, you may live longer for it!! carbon monoxide poisoning is not a good experience.

You could use cooker hood flexi hose, but obviously it isn't as hard wearing as the original. Or a piece of plastic drainpipe, with some flexi hose to connect it at either end and maybe some in the middle to give it a bit more flexibility. I've not tried to buy any VW stuff though so I don't know if it's avalable or not.
