Eberspacher Problem

I am having problems getting my B2L petrol Eberspacher to work properly. I have read wiki and all the threads and carried out some initial checks as advised in them, I also have a manual.

It will start up and operate correctly for a few minutes, running hot. The blower speed/heat reduces then shuts down completely. The longest it ran correctly today was for about ten minutes. I have tried it numerous times with the same results. On a couple of occasions it produced white smoke and once brown smoke. It will fire up each time but the heat is intermittent.

I have been starting the heater with the engine on to give it the correct voltage plus I know the Leisure battery is defective and will be replaced shortly.

The fuel pump is working fine and I removed the Glow plug and gave it a wipe, it had a slight coating of carbon. The electrical connections appear ok. On removing the plug I noticed there wasn't an atomiser/gauze screen. Would it be wise to replace the plug?

I have also checked the outlet and it's not obstructed.

I have no Eberspacher dealers nearby other wise it would have gone in for a service.

Any advice would be greatly received before I start seeking professional help.

i'm not sure the petrol versions have the atomiser gauze at the plug, i may be wrong ( if your female and reading this,i am wrong!)

Did you clean the filter in the fuel pump?
Did you do the fuel metering test?
Is yours the model with the wacky thermostat? Is it set high enough?

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't cleaned the fuel filter as i could see it pumping fuel when the heater was working. I take it the fuel pump only works when the heater asks for fuel?

Not sure about the Fuel metering test?

Do you think i should change the glow plug just for illimination purposes?

I have this Thermostat

The Plot Thickens

Just checked the fuel pump filter and its clean as a whistle. I went to start the van up and my battery was dead. The battery was changed at the start of the month and its one for a diesel vehicle. The guy at VW said it would be more suitable for a Camper. When the other battery died there was no indication of any problems, parked it up at work and 8hrs later went to start it and the battery was dead.

I have just spoken the local mechanic and he said the electrical relay for the leisure battery is possibly staying open and drawing the power. This would also effect the heater.

Could this then be the cause for the heater not to work?

I have taken the fuses out of the little black box behind the drivers seat (LHD westy Joker) so as not to drain the main battery. Would i be right doing so ?

Mark i have checked the inlet.

I work away and use my van to commute so its not as straight forward for me to book it anywhere.

Ok guys, thanks again.
