Ive recently acquired this T25 fitted with a JX 1.6 TD. Apparently the engine was exchanged in 1999 at 135000km, its only done 65000km since then. Im not familiar with either the engine or the T25 so I have 'performance' questions for the knowledgable Forum guys and gals.

The engine sounds a bit noisy and rattles but now starts first click since I changed the glow plugs; maybe the injectors need checking?
What is normal 'road speed' and 'revs' with the 5 speed box ?
What is advisable/ best cruising speed?
When driving there is no perceivable 'kick in' of the turbo ? At what revs should the turbo be most effective?
Is there an easy 'test/check' for turbo performance?

I know its a heavy bus (especially when loaded for camping!) but this engine does not seem to be doing its best, any help/advice would be appreciated

If they're looked after the JX can be a solid reliable engine.

With ours we tend to cruise at 2800 - 3000 rpm, so road speed depends on the gearbox you have.

Turbo kicks in around 2000rpm - not a big jump but you can definitely feel that the engine is struggling less.

Watch out for your engine temps particularly on steep grades. Changing down early and climbing at max 2200 rpm will greatly reduce the risk of overheating - don't worry about your speed.

Gear changes up should be so that you arrive in the higher gear above 2000 rpm.

Don't oversize your tyres as this will put your engine under strain. With our JX and a standard gearbox setup we see around 65 mph on the speedo at 3000 rpm.

A lot of people suggest fitting an extra oil cooler to these engines to improve lifespan.

The JX is a noisy, rattly engine. It is all mechanical, there are lots of bits of metal banging into each other (VW put the metal work (the nappy) around the engine to reduce the noise heard outside.

Some power loss is often caused by bad LDA. I would check it first.

I have done the basics, oil and filters, new glow plugs. Fuel tank off, cleaned refitted plus fuel filter. New air cleaner, so she is drinking and breathing well. Changed gearbox oil and seals as well on this unknown bus.

Drove a 200km trip (with some rain) and returned to find rear end lagged up with streaky black carbon deposits from the exhaust, something aint right
Will have to follow Baxters Bible
Also, I noted a few drops of black oil around the first joint of the silencer? That can't be good?

The youtube link from Titus was also very useful, reassuring to 'hear' another JX running as noisy as mine, bag of nails comes to mind

The bus had a nappy/tinware/splash guard when I purchased around/under the engine, a real bugger to get off, fiddly rusty bolts and screws. Had to come off to see the engine underside. Nappy was the right description, the inch thick soundproof cladding was soaked in black oil, a real s--t job to clean off.

If I replace the 'nappy' I have learned there is a product called 'fat mat' which is a very good alternative sound proof lining.

Re the Turbo, there is no perceived kick in at 2000 rpm!? maybe there are other engine issues (as in Baxters post) that mask the turbos proper function!?
