Auxilary water pump - not running

1990 T25 JX 1.6 TD

I have read somewhere the Auxiliary water pump (AWP) should run ( briefly ) when the Ignition is switched ON to prevent the AWP from seizing !? Can anyone confirm this please?

Also, I can't find a fuse for the AWP ? The AWP (new pump fitted!) does not run either when ignition ON or after hot engine stopped which seems incorrect. I have checked terminals on supply plug with volt meter and no power is evident.
Help, guidance appreciated. :?:

No it runs when the starter is operated.

The AWP power supply is via the glow plug fuse. There should be 12V at the pump all the time (it is earth switched). Check the red cable back to the pump supply where it connects to the glow plug relay.

As Bigherb wrote above.
Fuse is the glow plug 50A fuse. Its temp switch is at the engines front end coolant flange.
Beside that the ground is switched on by the small relay in the black box when the starter is engaged.

The switch is a 104C thermoswitch that switches to ground, so if you ground that wire, the pump should come on. On early ones with metal flange the switch has only one pin and one wire. On later vans with plastic flange there are two wires going to the switch one is the signal and the other is the ground. Cannot remember the colour, but the ground ones always brown and the switched grounds are brown with marker trace, so the other .

If the pump is not running, sou should test all components starting at the pump.

It could be that where the coolant temp senders are in your engine is down to whoever did the bodges before you owned it. My coolant temp gauge sender is the one on the forward end of the block, and has a single wire to it - grounding this flashes my coolant light. My coolant temp senders for the glow plugs and additional coolant pump are on the coolant flange on the right-hand side of the block. Wiring colours should* be an easy way to identify each sender, and in addition the coolant temp gauge sender can be identified the the behaviour of the gauge when it's wire is grounded. Wiring diagrams also available on the Syncrosport website.

But as ZsZ says, test all components working back from the pump itself. Putting 12v on the pump should make it whirr a bit, but I have to say mine (bought used and still not fitted) is not the most energetic of whirrs!

* Should...Not on my van, had to replace loads of broken and missing wires with whatever I had around...

Earth switched - Yes we have Power on the Red and I earthed the Brown and the pump ran OK

Thanks Bigherb :ok
