Help ID'ing diesel engine

Was told it's a 1.9L replacement engine from a Golf but not 100% on this. It's definitely a diesel and it gets up to 70mph without too much bother, beyond that I can't be certain.

With the engine being a few years old it's pretty difficult to read any of what's embossed on the side. I can quite clearly read '3ME' on the head though. Searching for that led me to some VW Golf forums but didn't give any definite answers.

Any help/suggestions appreciated!

the engine no. is on a flat below and to the left where you are looking on the side of the engine block not the head.

White paper tag on cambelt cover. Can't reason it in pic due to lighting. Will say on there. Am thinking 1y etc due to lack of LDA and oil line from filter head to turbo.

looks like an 1.9 prechamber diesel. Regarding to the pump it is a 1Y code 1.9 NA Diesel, but not sure

Label appears to have Spanish? on it - maybe from a Seat?
Wrong oil dipstick unless it has been re marked to suit new sump.
Looks a fairly rough engine!

Not an AEF. The injection pump is not right for an AEF.

AEF has Lucas pump AFAIK, but that can be changed to a Bosch one

Thanks all.

Cambelt cover reads "1Y 890926 * 13/09/00", so it's definitely a 1Y. It also has a warning in Spanish, so yes Seat most likely. Googled 890926 but that doesn't throw anything up.

Struggling to find the number on the engine block, not sure whether it's the lack of light or corrosion that's to blame, will have another look tomorrow.

Haha, it does look a bit rough compared to yours! Was running pretty well when I bought it – good pull, no smoke etc. Been having some problems starting recently but I'm fairly sure they're unrelated (first battery/wiring, then fuel filter). Only paid a few grand for the van so it's not tip-top but it had 10 months MOT, a fairly decent service history and the bodywork was solid so took a punt on it. Only time will tell if it pays off, worse case I'll learn for next time

Hmmm... there is something around there but it's not really readable.

Not that - it is on a machined flat to the left.
