Does anyone know how to get more torque out of a 1.9 DG waterboxer engine running a standard Pitburge carb.
Cheers .

I believe that someone will be along to soon to tell you to put a 2.1 in, I`ve got more chance of getting more talk out of mine than torque as its full of chatter

Is your DG healthy or tired, do a compression check.
A tired DG will not produce the same power as a freshly rebuilt one.

The engine is A ok but I think the carburettor needs a refurb .

More Torques...Try a K&N Air Filter and a Speedshop exhaust to help it breath better, good for 10BHP, bit pricy though. Carb. refurb too, as mentioned, rebuild kits are reasonable £. Check you have the correct spark plugs in it, so many generic plugs get put into these vans over the years, you'd be surprised the difference they can make, cheap too. (Coil with green sticker: Bosch WR 7 LT+ (1.0mm gap) or Coil with grey sticker: Bosch WR 7 D+ (0.8mm gap). Check the timing as well. Finally, does the van run straight, could be crabbing if the tracking is out, might feel as though it's robbing some power too, if only through friction. Hope that helps.

Bromyard VW will put your carb back to it's original best.
To achieve any noticeable extra torque then the timing, pistons, camshaft and crankshaft need to be replaced for a striker engine.
VW fortunately already did this and produced the 2.1 wbx
VW added an injection system, but it's not necessary.you can use the existing carb set up from your DG.
BHP increases from 76 to 112.
Alternative engines are less easier to fit.
Suffice to say there are many, but the Golf 1.8 seems to be the one of choice
Second only to Subaru boxers

I have had a number of (camper) vans over the years and the way to get them to go like the clappers was to rev the balls off them- even the side valve Fordson with the wooden body.
To be honest though my 2.1 WBX is a complete mystery too me even after 10 years of ownership.
The power seems to be delivered fairly evenly between 1500 to 4500 with a slight bulge around 3500. Although I have to admit that it is probably the heaviest vehicle which I have owned especially when packed by her ladyship even only just for a long weekend. So while I seem to be plodding I am in fact proceeding quite quickly having little sense of acceleration and little change in what little I can hear of the exhaust note. in fact I tend to change on the rev counter rather than by ear. I tend to do motorway cruising in fifth changing to fourth on some of the steeper inclines sometime reaching 4000 RPM to keep the momentum up between 60 and 70 MPH. It is as though the van is powered by a giant elastic band with a more or less flat power output. I believe the ECU tends to have a degree of control over the driver technique - one factor being the rev limiter.
When I was having ECU problems I did consider fitting carbs and would expect the 2.1 WBX to be a lot livelier in the gears. Anyone got a 2.1 WBX with carbs?
So when I think about a 1.9 on carbs I would hope it would be if not having as much torque at least be a bit livelier in the gears.
Maybe the one in question just needs a bit of a makeover

My guess wouod be that the 2.1 on a Pierburg would not deliver the same power as the injection system, more than a DG yes but perhaps not the full 112

112 is a VW quoted figure, I seem to recall that VW figures are subjective
Power is not down much, just in a different place, according to the dynograph figures I saw way back when.

At least the emissions aren't the figures in question here.

What about a bit of turbocharging, now that would increase the torque.

Can't say i have ever come across a turbo charger for the WBX.

Looks like this guy was having a go at a WBX Turbo. Haven't read the post in full mind. Looks super complex and by the fact the post ends before completion I'm guessing it never happened.
