Fuel Gauge Won't Read Over 1/4

Hope you guys don't mind but I have a lot of issues with my t25 I need help with so I may start making a lot of posts asking for help.

My fuel gauge never reads over 1/4 no matter how much fuel you put in. It's a 1.9 petrol 1984 LHD. When the actual fuel level gets down to what I assume is actually 1/4 then it starts reading properly right down to the red. Occasionally when it's pretty full the needle jumps up to nearly half way for only a couple miles but it's rare to see that happen. The previous owner had the tank replaced and said this problem developed right off that bat after the replacement. So I'm guessing it's more likely the float in the tank and not the gauge. Anyone had this problem or know what I can do. I can't track my consumption. All I get is a 30 mile warning or so until it runs out as I can tell when the needle has moved towards the red.

It is possible they managed to fit the sender the wrong way round, the float should fit to the front so it can rise to the highest point of the tank.

Ah right, I guess I have to drain the tank and drop it out to access the sender though?

You can check the wireing out, take the wire of the sender and the gauge should read empty short it to earth it should read full.

Ah yes, good idea, That will test everything that's not it the tank itself.
