I need to change the ignition switch and I need some help please. How do you remove the horn push to get at the steering wheel nut? I cannot find any assistance from manuals or elsewhere. Thanks.

Gently lever it out with a small screw driver, there are 4 plastic hook like thingies that flip out when you lever it out.

If you have the later style wheel with the large horn push there are 6 tabs that hook under ,1 either side of the vw sign, the others are further along the long sides. It is the lower part of the horn push that sits in the steering wheel that you have to prise out not the upper part that has the vw sign. Remember that there are wires for the horn push so when it comes off lift it up a few inches and pull the wires off.

So, changing the switch didn't cure the problem. As I'm short of time I took the van into my local auto electricians. They checked the starter motor first. Then they checked the alternator. It was charging erratically so was not charging the battery properly. I felt a chump as I knew I had a problem but I thought that it was caused by a battery drain. Anyway, they changed the alternator for a new one for the sum of £128+VAT. It's now starting and charging fine. Now I can go and collect the mother-in-law tomorrow. Still it is xmas I guess.
