Radiater fan

I'm sure that this is simple, but which fuse controls the radiater fan, my synncro was (I think) a 2.1 many years ago, the cover for the fuse box says fuse 1 but thats ok. It should be 30Amp but which one is it? The fan works well when I put 12v straight to it, but no power at radiater sensor plug. Help please I only have a Hayes Aircooled manual!!

Looks like you'll need this...

After a while, wiring diagrams start to make sense, and then they are invaluable.
Good luck

Check the thermoswitch on the rad, it's 2 'speed'
first kicks in at 90deg ish, second at 100deg ish through no 5 relay.
( It's all in the Bentley)

No personal experience in the fan aspect of my van really, but I did recall reading a thread about fuses / relays tucked up above the normal fuse box.
Here it is below:

One comment mentions that setup on 2.1 vans too...

Yep, the relay is just above earth crowns. Most likely cause is furred up contacts if thats the reason fan not working. All I had to do with mine is unplug and plug the relay back in after a clean with wet n' dry paper. Mind you, highly unlikely fan will operate this time of year anyway.

Arh thats what I needed, so its above the fuse box, hadnt looked there, but there is a big 70a relay up there with a very solid looking link, so that could be it? Will look at it on monday, thanks all.

Yep. That relay is just as much subject to corrosion as earth crowns. Problems can range from totally dead to constantly blowning fuse. It there to provide the current needed when the fan is running at flat out speed - which is considerable. At low speeds, the fan doesn't use the relay.

I've never heard my fan going on - is there any easy way to test if its working right without taking everything apart?

Let the vehicle sit there for a while, ocassionally giving sustained revs of about 2500. Fan should kick in once engine is up to temperature. On the road at this time of year, the ram effect through rad is sufficient for the fan not to kick in. I must admit I have a manual switch too which a) provides a test point and b) means you can force the fan on in the case of an overheat due to a fault with the rad stat. The switch replaced the dash dimmer which Was useless once I changed dash lights to 10mm LEDs. A manual rad switch seemed far more useful.

So a bypass rad fan switch has to switch 450w of fan? you must use a relay me thinks, wired direct onto the fan? When off roading I use sustained higher revs in low gear and it does get hot as all will have witnessed at camper jam!! A switch would be very useful.

Aye, but its only for the ultra-paranoid that switch. I've not had cause to use it except when I was sat in heavy/stationary traffic during the Summer once and even then, temperature wasn't at end of scale. I just flicked it on, well, because I could

I wired in a switch today that just triggers the relay so switching on fan at full belt. I dont know if its because I have a 2.3 audi 5 pot engine, but I really do need the extra cooling when off roading. Cant get the low speed to work but havnt given up yet! ran the syncro up today and let it idle on drive without fan on. switched it on and the temperature didnt rise so it appears to work.
