I had an Alfa 33 sports wagen estate and it was a flat four boxer engine, very reliable and that car was quick (0-60 in 7 secs, 125mphish), i know the car was lighter but i think it was a 1.7 and the torque was superb as anyone tried one in a T3. There may even be a more powerful engine in the Alfa range anyone know? Jus asking to be different as not convinced on a subuaru til i try one and the porsche way loox tooooooo expensive!

The alfa flat four engine was a good alternative and was used in T2 vans as i recall. The need for an adapter plate to the gearbox is required. The alfa cars used to get horrible rust problems many where scrapped with good engines.

I know a guy in crowborough running one in a bay, think its 1.7 and about 110bhp, was running twin carbs, fitted nicely though he was struggling a bit with the plumbing (rad in back of engine bay not providing enough cooling. the bay is pretty nippy, but a fair bit lighter than a wedge
a quick google found this on wikipedia, not looking like your gonna do much better than a 2.1 vw wbx...
