Ive just bought a 1990 T25 and looked under the engine compartment and found the 'bucket like' tin splash guard is rusty/damaged in some places. New to this vehicle! how to remove? where to get a replacement? Help from any of you knowledgeable folk appreciated : :D Ta Bison

Several little bolts hold the guards on
Obsolete now
Take em of and clean em up best you can
Or buy a used pair in better condition

Hi guys, thanks for feed back. I called it a 'splash guard', some call it 'tinware'? not sure of the proper name? Anyway, mine is like a tray, but all the edges curve upwards to form like a big rectangular metal sink (with a drain hole in the tray area) The vertical sides have small 90 degree flanges at the top where it is bolted up under and around the engine. From under you can't see any of the engine components! Guess it holds any minor oil drips etc until they eventually find their way to the drain hole
I would prefer to remove the 'splash guard' and leave it off so that engine underside inspection can be easy and done at any time. Will get a pic sorted!

Ah, a pic of the big 'sink like' under engine 'splash guard'. Is it necessary? can't see or get at anything under engine! OR, does it have another purpose as well as being a 'splash guard', like directing air flow?? Mine IS water cooled :D

Any thoughts please, cheers :D

I think Keith is right, the tin is mostly removed.
Dirty engine bay ensues.

They do have some sound deadening.....but mine used to rattle more than it deadened

Thanks for feed back guys, next dry day and I will be removing the 'thing' to reveal all :ok
Maybe clean up the 'under tray/splash guard' and replace if all is well and no big increase in noise.
Cheers, happy travels :D

I'd suggest leaving/replacing them for several reasons. They reduce noise from the engine (VW generally termed them 'sound deadeners'), they keep road cr*p off it, and they're a nice original feature which is frequently missing. The chunky self-tappers are called 'acme screws' BTW, easy to replace if any are missing and causing the tray to rattle.

Thanks for the additional knowledge, clean up and replace seems to be best solution :ok
