Strange Engine Noise

Morning All,
I hope you can shed light on a mysterious noise......
Reversed into my drive yesterday after driving with no problems and the engine noise suddenly changed to what sounded like a banging and rattling noise from the engine. The diesel 'rattle' had become a lot louder. I feared the worse.
Went out for a few hours on family duties and on my arrival home decided to explore the possible source of problems.

Turned van over.......and perfectly normal. Took Dotty out for a drive and no strange sound at all.

Any thoughts?

Thanks all

Steve

My jx makes a rattling sound noticeable when in neutral, which quietens when the clutch is depressed , which I was thinking might be caused by excessive crankshaft endfloat or gearbox bearings/ internals

I've had similar twice on mine (diff engine running a 1.9 1Y) first time it was the cambelt idler puller having sheared off and sounded very diesly!! second time was just an exhaust mount rubber giving up and making a metallic knocking when the exhaust cuaght on something. Worth a look before assuming the worst

Thanks for the replies.
My only concern is that it did make the noise and then nothing, surely if it was bearings or gearbox problems the noise would still be audible?

I am going to see a diesel specialist in Wimbledon this week and have a word, my JX has done 330,000km now and starting to smoke.
Think some TLC or a new engine is on the cards

Cheers

Steve

If all else fails it could be the radiator fan cutting in with dodgy bearings or a twig in the blades.
