1.6td hot start problems, what to check first

Starting from cold is fine, even today at 0 degrees.
When hot if the van is left for 5 mins it starts ok but if you turn off then try and start 30 secs or so later it just won't fire. It seems to want to go with the odd puff of grey smoke coming out the exhaust but won't fire up.
I set the pump timing at approx 0.95 a few weeks ago and it pulls really nicely. Air and fuel filters are very recent also.
The starter doesn't spin over really fast so I don't know if the battery isn't helping either
The engine is a jr code running a jx pump.
I haven't had the van long so just finding my feet and wondering what to check first
Thanks

What does the yellow preheat light on the dashboard do in the scenarios? My previous van would be a poor restarter when warm and a quick mod fixed it (search for glow resistor).

Glow plug light is on whatever the starting situation hot or cold
Can't really remember it going off before starting the engine even after energising the glow plugs for 20 secs

Thanks windy, I'll try the resistor mod, it certainly seems to be a not uncommon issue
