Mine are working ok but I don't think I have replaced them in over 5 years, is it something that should be done regularly or just wait until they stop working, thanks?

I replace mine when needed,I start with checking the easy to reach ones with an ohm meter first.

I have a new meter so I could check, any idea what they should read?

Yes they will read like a dead short if they're OK ( the same as when you touch the meter probes together! )
If they're not working they'll read open circuit.
You won't be able to read their resistance unless you have a milli-ohm meter!

Each one is around 0.5 ohm, cold engine.
