Since I picked it up in late summer, I’ve watched as the flower of rust has begun to bloom across the van
in different places and with different intensity. I have the small under paint patches around the petrol filler and headlights,
and then there is the seam rust, just one seam at the moment but I’m sure it will surface elsewhere given time.
Finally there is the full on bubble rust, all ripe and crunchy just waiting to be picked and the big hole to appear.
So the time has come for some remedial work to be carried out on the van and the questions to flow.
I can handle the under paint rust ( I laugh in its general direction!) BUT after sanding down and a coat of Vactan
do I need to red oxide pre primer OR will just primer over Vactan do?
The seam rash, again I have a good idea of what to do. The only question I have will depend on the answer to red oxide/primer
question above. Prime, sealant, top coat.
Now the biggie! Cutting out rust and welding.
Luckily the bubble rust is only around the Kitchen window and the sliding door window opposite.
So, once again I have a good idea of what I need to do and have been buying the kit and bits to do it, but I have a few questions.
How easy is it to remove and hang the sliding door on my own? I would like to get this in the garage for the day if possible,
and as a side note is it possible to put the windows back in on my own?
Once I have the windows out do I need to remove the kitchen area to do the repairs? if I can get away without doing that then

I intend to use 1mm steel for the body repairs but what do I buy? cold rolled, hot rolled, anything with anti rust coating?
I’m thinking cold rolled but I’m open to advice from the knowledgeable.
First job will be the seam rash as I think that is the most dangerous to leave, I really don’t want to be replacing panels yet. Then
the patches as they are the easiest and just surface rust, then the bubble rust as that has already done its damage and will be
cut out anyway.
I intend to do a log of the work so once the vans done I will work on that.
All advice will be appreciated for a first timer. Wish me luck, I'm going in!
