Ok my 2.1 went pop on wednesday and the price of a new 2.1 is off putting and can you really trust a old second hand engine. So I think I will go for a alternative engine the 5 cylinder audi appeals to me as they are very smooth motors and the subaru just sound nice

.
My T25 is an auto with power steering and I would not want to lose them, will this cause a problem?.
Also can you recommend anyone to do the job.
Cheers Sam

The 5-cylinder is a fairly difficult conversion as the engine is both too long and too high for a UK van (the South African ones have different bell housing etc and the rear floor is higher). I was considering it but used a 4 cylinder in-line mounted upright (in a pick up so no hight problem) in the end as I had a new one left over from another dead jalopy. I wouln't reccommend this route either though as there is a lot of detailed fiddling to get it all to work well and a Tdi would have been no harder and cheaper to run after.

With your van being an Auto, you are very limited to what engine you can replace your ill 2.1 with.
The auto only came with a 1.9 or 2.1 petrol engines and as the gearbox is a very different unit to the manual gearbox, you can't use the VW Audi 5 cylinder bellhousing.
Believe it or not, the cheapest engine replacement will probably be another 2.1 wasserboxer.
Any engine conversion would involve an adaptor plate, plus all the one off parts for the conversion.
I think the only other engine you might get parts to fit would be a subaru engine and look at
http://www.smallcar.com/ and see if they offer an auto conversion kit.
It will cost more than buying a new 2.1 though.
Good luck.

Having been in exactly the same situation (2.1DJ auto) I concur.
Unless you want to spend lots of time/money converting from auto to manual get the WBX fixed or try Elite VW for an affordable replacement one.

Or sell the van like I did.
