Headlining plans on the wiki

Anyone used the plans on the wiki to make a headlining?

I'm confused with regards to the purpose of the very first loop for the front. I'd assumed the headlining started by being glued at the front with windscreen rubber then put over it? Taking a look at my van this certainly seems the case, also the measurement from screen to first bar appears to be more than 205mm.

Now assuming the first loop isn't actually needed could I in theory just have extra fabric at the front to then trim once stuck in place?

Was there ever a thread which explained the plans, width, cut marks etc? I've browsed here and brickyard a few times but with no joy.

Having never made one I would say that these are the measurements for the rear section and not for the cab.

Thanks for the reply, certainly made me think twice around my initial assumption. Having popped out to the van though the dimensions and number of bars do suggest it's a full length plans.

I just don't know why there's a front loop.

Section 6 doesn't have a loop, could that be the front?

Just had a look at my factory roof. The first seam is the one at 205mm from the top of the pic. The edge under the screen rubber does not appear to be stitched, and definitely does not have a 20mm bar through it.

It also doesn't mention width

Thanks chaps, think I'll use it purely as guidance as quite a few bits of information missing. Width is definitely a consideration as most vinyl I've seen is around during 54" which could be pretty tight across the roof and under the side windows.

When I did my bus interior I also noticed that the vinyl was short, I had to make do with a join across the middle section going from side window to side window, my initial plan was to cover the window side posts and anywhere else down the sides.
My mrs then covered the seams with teddy bears, looks ok to me

The factory cab headlining is folded over the windscreen aperture and glued on. F.ord, for example, used little u shaped barbed clips to help hold the headlining in place, along with glue to secure it. That said, modern adhesives would probably be enough to hold it in place without clips ( bearing in mind such headlining isnt used anymore anyway, they are all moulded)

When I've re-trimmed roof linings after them being taken out for accident repair work, like fitting a new roof skin or repairing a dent for example, it was the norm to first hang it on the first rail at the front and work back and then fix it to the windscreen and door openings with glue, stretching it and fixing it as it progressed along to the back of the vehicle. The adhesive used then was 3m Fast tac, which was the proverbial s**t off a shovel stuff though the modern solvent free stuff around today won't perhaps be as effective

On my old van, I replaced the Holdsworth (villa3 pop top) headling with megavan mat material. Using a denim grade sewing needle in a domestic sewing machine, I made new seams, put the metal rod though and secured it to the nylon clips in the cant rail and then trimmed the material, stretched and glued it to the window apertures (glass out) and once the glue had set, refitted the windows. Where the material met up to the uprights by the windows I folded the edge of the headlining about a quarter inch, trimmed the upright with more material and then glued the headling edge up to that, to give a nice looking joint. I did the same where it mm et up to the factory join and it looked pretty good to my eye.

It takes time, but not too difficult to do if you are patient. :ok

I glued mine to the front windscreen lip with trimfix high temp spray glue.
