What distributor is this?

Engine is a 2.1 in a 1988 Vanagon, previous owner ripped out the injection system (literally) and stuck on a carburettor and other non-standard parts including this distributor.
The vacuum advanced is stiff so I'll be removing it to clean the mechanical linkages.
Diaphragm is fine.
Many thanks,
Mike.

could it have been a 1.9 origionally?

Oh a Powerspark one, cheap and cheerful then!!
To be honest I haven't actually checked the engine number yet just assumed as the Registration document and previous owner says it's a 2.1 litre.
I believe the retro-fitted carburettor and distributor is from a 1.9 litre engine though.

lots of people have stuck a 2.1 in a van that origionally had a 1.9 with 2e3 carb and kept the carb.
Easier than fitting the injection system.
So worth checking what it origionally was, it maybe even the v5 has been changed too.

Turns out it's a Bosch / VW distributor with a petronix Ignitor - from a 1600 Aircooled engine?
DJ Engine code is correct for 1988 2.1 (112 Bhp)

The distributor is off a 1300 twin port Beetle
The engine code DJ is 2.1l and it is a factory reconditioned unit.

Hi Itchyfeet, as per above post do you think I should be changing the distributor for the correct one for say a 1.9 / 20 WBX?
Turned out the vacuum advance mechanism was not stiff, the diaphragm was the cause of the stiff / restricted movement.
Checked the timing with a strobe gun and it was way out!

Yes ideally change for a 2.1 distributor if you can find one, mick at nw vw may have one
need the ignition modeule ( Brickwerks have geunine vw cheap) and the loom you can probably get from wagonbuild.

Ok thanks for the info bigherb, I'm assuming the ignition advance curve would be completely out for a 2.1l then?
Fair play it fits though, it's a right mix and match of parts!

Ok I will look to purchasing one thanks.
What is the significance of MV pistons?

lower compression than DJ
I have seen DJs with them in, must have blown a DJ piston abd cheaoer to fit a set of MV
Anyway point is the engine number is no guarantee of what's inside.

What loom is this as there's no provision for the idle stabilisation unit??
Can I make it work?
Also what side of the diaphragm do I connect the inlet manifold to? as there is two ports, one each side.

Found this by googling mk1 golf distributor loom, could this work by connecting it all up as shown?
Your help is much appreciated.

Hi just to let you all know this wiring loom arrangement worked fine and I'm lead to believe mine is from a mk2 Golf.
Only problem I have now is timing, at 5 Deg BTDC it still feels incorrect.
(Distributor mechanical and vacuum advance checked)
