4bike rack help please

I need to carry 4 bikes but I understand it's not a good idea for the fiamma one on the rear door. Does anyone have ideas or links to different systems. Thanks

Paulchen racks can carry up to 4 bikes. They crop up from time to time on eBay or the forum, or you can still get them new from the German manufacturer.

Max raxx are good of you have a tow bar and the bikes have cross bars
It also leaves the tow bar free to use of that make any difference

I'm assuming that with the tow bar ones you can't open the back door?

Assuming is a risky business, especially in this instance as it is actually possible to tilt the tow bar mounted rack towards the ground which then enables you to open the tailgate. :ok

It's also pretty difficult opening the tailgate if it's got a loaded bicycle rack hanging off it.

I'm sure I've read on Facebook that people fit uprated tailgate assisters to overcome this, the only problem being that when nothing is on the rack, the tailgate may send you skywards!

We used to keep our spare (approx 25kg) on a modified Paulchen rack and while updated gas struts helped they weren't strong enough to keep the tailgate open on their own.

Hi, sorry to contradict your first post but I have carried 4 bikes (2 adult and 2 child's) regularly on a Fiamma bike rack with no problems.

Hi

You can build a 4-bike rack by combining parts from a Fiamma T25 and T5 rack. You have to drill and cut some tubes, but the end result is sturdy and retains all the benefits of the fiamma system.

Cheers

Used a Fiamma rack for a while, with 4 full-size-ish bikes on it and a kids bike tied on top - so 5!. Now use a Maxxraxx which we had on another car, and which I'm a big fan of. And it tilts down to allow the tailgate to open - even when bikes are on the rack (tho you need to jiggle the bikes backwards to get the ground clearance, and lifting the rack with 4 or 5 bikes up again - while securing it - is a two person job at least.)
