Hi everyone I'm new to this so bear with me
I have a 1990 T25 I have just received news from my local garage the my gearbox is shot. However I need to ask a few questions if you people can I would appreciate it. The issues are its a 5 speed dog leg box 2nd and 4th go in to gear fine but if you decelerate they pop out of gear!! Do you think this a gearbox problem or a linkage/outside gearbox parts problem. Also 1st has just started doing the same thing which I find strange as it's a dogleg box. Any help or advice would be appreciated or a recommendation of where I could take it local to myself which is southamton.

Sounds like gearbox to me.
Aidan Talbot is usually on here and would be able to tell you for sure.
He is highly reccomended for the rebuild but he is too popular and usually has a few months waiting list.
A rebuild is of £700-1000

Two options spring to mind.

buy second hand (£300- 500) get yours repaired by Aidan , swap back keep or sell second hand box.
Look for another gearbox rebuilder, these people have been mentioned before but most of us wait for Aidan.

Where in Soton are you?
Nowhere round here I know of will do this, ypu need special tools

Worth noting 5 speed gearboxes corrode badly by the mounting bracket
when you remove it get it cleaned and painted there as a minimum.

Like yours my gearbox is shot. How important is it to get a box with the same code? And do all the gearboxes of different codes for the t25 nevertheless fit straight onto the engine? In other words are they all interchangeable? If so l'll hang on until I come across a replacement.........like looking for hen's teeth........thanks for any replies....Richard.

You could swap everything to 4 speed if you find a good one, code is very important, check what yours is and look on rjes gearbox site to compare.

swap to 4 speed will make it easier to find, need to swap gear leaver and box below with part of linkage also

put your engine type in your signature with year

Very helpful as always. Many thanks. I'm just wondering if the various gearboxes in the rjes website are physically all the same to fit to the engine, so that if a box is similar in performance then will the bell housing, length of box etc., be like the old one or not? I don't want to buy a box unseen from a dealer and then find it doesn't fit.
Thanks for your patience from someone punching in the dark. After all, it's not something I have to worry about too often. The old box has been driving for about 25 years........Cheers.....Richard.

Petrol and diesel bellhousing are not the same , also the bracket between rubber mount bracket and gearbox are various sizes. You still have not said what engine you have.

Sorry......it's a diesel 1600 bored out to 1900. It may originally have come from a Passat in about1992 but it's so long ago now I can't be sure. Is there any way to tell for sure?.
I can't believe how helpful you are. It's really heartwarming when one is surrounded by so many prats every day. A million thanks......Richard.

Out of the blue an old engineer friend came round and when I mentioned the problem with the gearbox he told me to drop it out and he will see what the problem is. When I've looked at rebuilding on you tube it all looks like black magic but he seems totally unfazed by it all. I'll write again with an update......Richard.
