SUbaru EJ25 conversion - runs 4 seconds and dies

Hi,
I've put in a Subaru SOHC EJ25 N/A conversion with RJES loom into my bus my van was a 1.9DG. Engine code is BE9, Donor vehicle was a Subaru Legacy GX AWD Auto reg 99/00 and a runner, bought car complete and stripped everything out and sent to RJES to convert the loom.
It fires up every time and runs for 4 seconds and dies as if you turned it off, I have exhausted everything I can think of, checked, and double checked everything.
Ignition:
Van has a thatcham ignition immobiliser as well as the Subaru immobilizer. All the Subaru barrel, collar and bits are under R&R bed all together.
Process:
I disable thatcham ignition immobilizer, key in, turn and fuel pump primes, no flashing error codes. Turn key and van fires. If I touch the throttle it dies, if I leave it it dies after 4 seconds. Check Engine light is on. I can turn key again and it starts again no problem, 4 seconds and dies. the pump then dies after the engine has.
Fuel:
It has a new birckwerks pump, new fuel hoses, clips and filter....line from T25 tank > pump > filter > fuel rail. I have also added a fuel pressure gauge which reads about 36 psi.
Loom:
Checked everything a number of times with Richard from RJES, he is adamant all is good. All the tests he asked me to do came back OK.
Hoses:
All vac hoses are brand new as are the clips. all connections checked, double checked and triple checked. Sprayed carb cleaner about to check for leaks, no change in engine note.
Is there anything with the old VW ignition that could cause it to die ? any 4 second electrical signal ?
Appreciate any other thoughts or suggestions.
Cheers, Richard

I tried to start mine the other day & I had forgotten to put the Subaru key into the barrel under R & R bed, it did something similar to what you're describing although I can't remember how long it ran for before cutting out, put the key in, back to normal.
Have you got the spare Subaru key you could try?

Hi Tony,
The Subaru key is in the ignition barrel with all the other bits and bobs under the R &R bed. I don't take it out.
Thanks, Richard

Did you leave a rag shoved in the inlet tract ?

Whoa there, just saw the last thing you wrote.
If you really are saying the ignition fails after 4 seconds, then it's nothing to do with the Subaru side at all is it ? Or is that not what are saying ?

Hi Andy,
I feel like I've exhausted every avenue regarding the Subaru side and wonder if its not Subaru related but the original van....considering a new angle that is all.
Happy to hear any options Subaru or VW related to be honest.
Thanks, Richard

Leaving you with the check engine light on, means it's stored a code, right?
Have you then read the code?
My immobiliser will run for a few seconds and cut out abruptly, if it's not got the subaru key present.

So is ignition going off or not when the engine stops ??????? Might be time for a fresh switch ? You could test by just hotwiring your Subaru ignition to the battery to isolate the VW ignition. Then start the engine as normal and see.

Hi,
Check engine light - no codes. I have OBD 1 so a flashing light shows me error codes,I have had error codes when I first put the engine in, one was for a dodgy sensor which I replaced and cleared the error codes, I have also reset the ECU.
The key is in the barrel with the collar and transponder all safely together under the R&R bed.
Regards, Richard

Hi, engine dies, check engine light comes on. RJES also thought to check the ignition, so I rigged up a bulb from the earth to the 15A fuse next to the 2 yellow tabs on the RJES fuse box, it stayed lit throughout the testing.

doesn't this point at the Thatcham immobiliser ?
Can you take that out of the equation ?

What codes are you getting and what sensor did you replace ?
Can you say 100% it's not the immobiliser on the van ? What is the immobiliser light from the Subaru set up doing ? This should go out once it's starts
I also help run my own Subaru forum (
http://www.bbscoobys.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) so your more than welcome to join up and ask on there as its free to join , we have a few Subaru techs on there that may be able to help

I'm not getting any codes now, just check engine light only. I replaced the TPS sensor.
Thanks, Richard

Good point, will have a look - no idea how they are wired in and how to remove / bypass it.
