Stuck crank oil seal

I'm changing my crank pulley oil seal to fix a leak. I've successfully got the pulley off, but the seal itself is a right ball ache. I've tried pulling, digging and prying but I'm scared I'm going to damage something. The inner band of orange rubber and a spring have come out, but the outer metal band is stuck fast. Any suggestions?

It's an early 1.9DG btw

Right.. got it out by getting a screwdriver between the band and the case and then bending the seal inward until there was something to get pliers on.

Problem now is that the seal has left some crud and corrosion on the wall of the face where it seals. It feels slightly rough to touch. Can I clean this off with emery or brasso or something, or will that do more harm than good?

seal surface on flywheel is surface hardened so you can clean it with say a scotch pad or fine emery; if badly scored or pitted then you can fit a SpeediSleeve to restore surface

Ok, I'll have at it with a scotch pad. I don't think it is damaged, just has some well stuck grot. Cheers
