So I have a new cab headlining to fit to my van. I have all the parts including the two metal rods and the witches hats. I have a few questions!

1. At the rear, is the headlining glued under the metal lip or just pushed in? The new headlining seems to have a reinforcing strip of cardboard at the rear.

2. At the sides, is it glued or just pushed in and how would you push the headlining in to keep it tight - the new headlining material doesn't have any reinforcing strips at the sides.

3. When putting in the rods, does it matter which way they "flop", forwards or backwards?

4. I have already fitted my windscreen with a new seal - what are the chances of being able to take it out without breaking it or destroying the new seal? Any tips on how to do this?

I fitted a new one two years ago. Based on my experience, I can only offer the following:
1. I folded the material over to increase the thickness. The metal fingers hold it nicely. I found the rear bit the trickiest as it pulls the lot taught.
2. See no 1.
3. Makes no difference, when it's pulled tight, start at the windscreen.
4. A new seal is cheaper than a new screen...

After two years of being installed nothing has moved and it's still tighter than a tight thing.

I glued the lining to the windscreen aperture, then worked rearwards. Make a nice fold around the a frame as that fold is on show! I used plenty of Croc clips (to hold lining on windscreen whilst the adhesive sticks) and business cards (when pushing material under the metal fingers, a screw driver will rip the material). You'll need a partner (with patience) and time.

Be meticulous on cleanliness (dettol wipes are great) to prevent marks and stains on your new lining.

Might as well give up now then, my wife has the attention span of a flea when she comes within 10 feet of the van!

I installed a headlining in a Karmann Ghia a few years ago buy it didn't have metal clamps around the edges and it was all held with glue around the window openings.

Well I managed to get the screen out without breaking it or cutting the seal. I sat in the passenger seat and put both feet flat on the glass near the top left corner and gently pushed while lifting the seal edges with my fingers. It gradually started to move and I worked my way along the top edge using the feet technique. Once it's all popped out at the top, you can just lift it out from outside the van.

Yep, can never understand why some panic about removing and replacing the windscreen. Always done them single handed and never had a problem. The trouble is you then get others asking you to do theirs...
