Fuel Expansion Tank Float Valve connection?

Hi, any help much appreciated...

I stripped out my fuel tank yesterday (1981 2.0 petrol LHD Westy), but I'm confused about where the hoses coming from the top of the float valves are suppose to go? The one on the left had a rubber hose and a open seal on the end, hanging loose, and the right just has hose hanging loose. Any idea where these hoses are meant to go or where they should connect to?

I think, (someone else will confirm or not) on US vehicals the expansion tanks vented to a charcoal filter and to the air cleaner.
On european and UK models the tanks vented to the air, through the hoses.
The hoses origionally had a metal gauze filter fitted to the ends (to prevent clogging with dirt and mud) and were tucked under the bodywork.

All the information with diagrams are in the Haynes manual, if you are going to do the work yourself get a good workshop manual. If you have early Aircooled get the green Haynes manual, watercooled , use the blue one.

The Trumpet (Shrek ears) connect to the pipe at the top of the expansion tanks and just hang loose.

Hang loose it is then! Thanks for the photo that really helps / confirms what I've got.

Unfortunately the Haynes manual misses this point!
